Residents in Stamford are expressing concern after swastikas and other symbols of hate were found spray painted on a local school over the weekend.
According to police, swastikas and other graffiti, including obscenities, were found at the Academy of Information, Technology and Engineering. They say the vandalism might have more to do with the school than outright anti-Semitism.
School officials say they cleaned up the paint as quickly as possible, but residents say they feel the incident is part of a growing trend across the country.
“Regardless of the motive of the perpetrator, which may have been ‘let's delay the start of school’ or something far more sinister, the effect of KKKs, of swastikas is to make people feel unsafe in their home,” says Lauren Stenberg, of the United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien. “Unfortunately, it comes during a period where there has been more of that in Stamford, in Connecticut and throughout our country.”
The Stamford School District and the mayor both released statements saying it's important to condemn hate and racism.
Police are continuing to investigate, but say these types of crimes can be hard to solve.
