1 dead, 1 in critical condition after 2-alarm fire

THE BRONX - An elderly woman is dead and her husband is fighting for his life after flames tore through their Riverdale home on Johnson Avenue this afternoon.

According to officials, the two-alarm fire started inside the couple's apartment on the 14th floor while they were both inside. They say it took 15 minutes to extinguish the flames, which did not spread to any other units.

Neighbors say 87-year-old Cornelia Dykshoorn and her husband, Marinus, lived in the building for more than 30 years and that today's fire is the second one to break out in their apartment.

Marinus Dykshoorn is listed in critical condition at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
