THE BRONX - One person is dead and another injured after a car crashed into an apartment building in Westchester Square early Thursday morning.

The accident caused a partial building collapse at East Tremont Avenue and Overing Street, and forced an evacuation at around 1 a.m.

Police say the driver of the silver Honda, 40-year-old Gilbert Alfonso, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 30-year-old female passenger was taken to Jacobi Medical Center.

Crews have safely extracted the vehicle from the brick building after more than 10 hours.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
