1 dead, 36 hospitalized after nursing home power outage

THE BRONX - One woman died and 36 other people hospitalized after a major power outage at a Gun Hill nursing home.

According to police, the Eastchester Rehabilitation & Health Care Center lost electricity at around 3 a.m. Sunday and its backup generator failed.

Officials say 37 patients on ventilators were taken to area hospital, including the woman who died. They say she had a do not resuscitate order that prevented workers from trying to keep her alive.

Con Edison says it took about a half-hour to restore power to the thousands of Bronx customers who were affected.
