10 suspects in anti-gay beatings appear in court

THE BRONX - All ten suspects in the Oct. 3 alleged anti-gay beatings appeared before a judge today.

Police say the accused men are members of the Latin King Goonies and targeted three victims after learning that two of them, including a 17-year-old trying to join the gang, had sex with each other.

Investigators say the suspects lured the victims to an abandoned house on Osborne Place, where they beat and sodomized them with wooden objects for more than 24 hours.

Ruddy Vargas-Perez was the only suspect to walk in and out of court after being released on $25,000 bail. His lawyer and family say the 22-year-old was not involved in the incident.

The men face several charges, including assault, criminal sex act and robbery, all as hate crimes. They are due back in court on either Oct. 21 or Oct. 25.
