11th suspect to be arraigned in alleged anti-gay beatings

THE BRONX - An 11th suspect has been arrested in the alleged Oct. 3 anti-gay beatings in University Heights.

According to police, Luis Garcia, 26, is part of a group of Latin King Goonies who beat and sodomized a 17-year-old recruit and two others after hearing he had sex with another man.

Investigators say Garcia wrapped chains around his hands and punched one of the victims, a 30-year-old man, repeatedly in the ribs. The suspect's mother, Carmen Garcia, claims her son is innocent and a friend to the man he allegedly beat.

Officials say Garcia has no prior arrests, but will face the same charges as the other 10 suspects, including assault as a hate crime.

Special investigators say Garcia was expected to be arraigned late Friday night.
