WOODLAWN - Local soldiers are preparing to deploy overseas nine years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Fifteen men and women from around the city are gearing up for a one-year deployment to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and at a base in upstate New York.

The soldiers are reservist judge advocates, working as law professionals by day and army soldiers when duty calls. Of the 15, some are headed for Fort Drum, some are going straight to Afghanistan and the rest, like Capt. Leicia Grant, will spend time at both.

"Thousands of people, innocent people, died on that day," she said. "And it reminds me of my commitment to my service to my country."
