16 corrections officers hurt during 2 fights at Rikers Island

THE BRONX - Department of Corrections officials say 16 corrections officers were injured during two fights at Rikers Island tonight.

According to officials, the fights broke out among inmates at around 6:30 p.m. They say the officers were attacked when they tried to break up the fights.

The officers were taken to Booth Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say the jail is now under control.
