161st Street Business Improvement District concerned over renovation of Concourse Plaza

Local residents say they want the redevelopment project to serve the community. (4/21/14)

THE BRONX - The head of the 161st Street Business Improvement District says he's concerned the renovation of Concourse Plaza won't benefit those in the local community.

Cary Goodman, the BID's executive director, says he's concerned the enhancement of Concourse Plaza is focusing on local commuters who work in the area, as opposed to the community.

"You've got middle-income to high-income people here who come here because this is the civic center for the borough," says Goodman. "Then there's a whole other constituency of people who live here."

Goodman also says while some businesses will be helped by the renovations, he was approached by other business owners who say they were evicted.

Local residents say they want the redevelopment project to serve the community, while those who work in the area say they would like to see more upscale-type retail facilities.
