A 19-year-old man who police say fired shots into a crowd of people during a fight and pointed a gun at officers has pleaded not guilty.

They say Christopher Rice fired two shots into a crowd of people and pointed a gun at police during a brawl on Jan. 8 at 2505 3rd Ave.

Police say officers returned fire and struck Rice four times. They say NYPD Police Officer Sherrod Stuart was hit by a bullet during the exchange, but officials say he was struck accidentally by a fellow police officer.

Both Stuart and Rice were taken to hospitals and are expected to be OK.

Rice was originally charged Monday with assault on a police officer, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. However, it was determined that Stuart was struck in friendly fire. New charges against Rise include second-degree attempted murder, menacing in the second degree and possession of ammunition.

Rice is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday.
