THE BRONX - A fire tore through an apartment building in Mott Haven Saturday, sending six people to the hospital.

Fire officials say flames broke out inside a third-floor apartment on Cypress Avenue early in the morning and then spread to the top floors.

Neighbors say they helped each other escape the burning building amid plumes of black smoke.

Two of the six people who were injured in the blaze are said to be firefighters. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
