THE BRONX - Police say a Bronx man has been charged in the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer.

According to authorities, 21-year-old Joseph Baez shot veteran officer Nelson Vergara as he was returning home in University Heights early Sunday morning. They say Vergara was hit twice after being confronted by a group of men.

Baez faces several charges, including attempted murder and assault.

Vergara is recovering at St. Barnabas Hospital.
