BROOKLYN - Brooklyn residents today celebrated the birthday of a Revolutionary War hero at a Fort Greene park named in his honor.

This month would have been the 269th birthday of Commodore John Barry.

Mary Nolan, president of the Commodore Barry Club of Brooklyn, says the group is committed to honoring the Irish-American who was best known as the unofficial father of the Navy.

"He was scarcely 15 when he left Ireland, the east coast, looking out over the water, which he seemed to be very much in love with, the sea and ships," said Nolan.

The club hosts a birthday celebration at the park every year for the commodore.
