THE BRONX - A fast-moving fire destroyed several families' apartments and at least three businesses in Melrose today. The blaze began in a home on Jackson Avenue and quickly spread to the roof and then next door.

More than 200 firefighters responded to the scene. Fire officials say that due to the wood frame and age of the structures, the buildings will most likely be demolished.

Officials say that two people who lived in the buildings are still unaccounted for. Three police officers and two firefighters were also injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
