THE BRONX - Two of three firefighters critically injured while responding to a massive fire in Wakefield remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday, according to officials.

The four-alarm fire broke out around 1 p.m. Tuesday on East 235th Street between Carpenter Avenue and White Plains Road.

The flames spread from a multifamily building at 636 E. 235th St. and destroyed five homes in total, the FDNY said. It was under control in about two hours.

Three of the firefighters were critically injured and taken to Jacobi Medical Center. Officials say 34-year-old FDNY member Patrick Morello suffered heat stroke; firefighter Joseph Brady, 51, suffered a heart attack; and 44-year-old firefighter Sean O'Rourke was injured in a crash and nearly lost his arm while driving a firetruck from Queens.

Another firefighter, Joseph Martorell, was released from the hospital Wednesday after suffering second-degree burns.

Fire officials said the fire was caused by children playing with a stove inside one of the units.

The Red Cross said it was assisting eight families impacted by the fire.
