NEW YORK - Three cases of Legionnaires' disease have been reported in Rockland County, one of which works in the South Bronx.

So far, a total of 12 people have died from the disease and 113 cases of Legionnaires' have been reported since the beginning of the outbreak. A total of 18 cooling towers in the Bronx have tested positive for the legionella bacteria, 11 of those are in the outbreak impact zone.

The City Council is expected to introduce legislation that would require all cooling towers to be registered with the Department of Buildings. It would also force quarterly inspections aligned with Department of Health guidelines, including testing and disinfection. There will also be mandated annual certifications of cooling towers.

The state's Office of Emergency Management and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control will also be taking samples from cooling tower sites.

As for now, the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Service has set up a mobile command center in the Bronx. Teams led by the state DOH will be providing residents with information about the disease.
