THE BRONX - The Department of Education brought forth a proposal Thursday to close four New York City schools, including one in the Bronx, because of poor performances.

Education officials say Frederick Douglas Academy 3 Middle School, which received a "C" on the DOE's report card, will likely be phased out beginning in September of 2010.

This fall, the school will stop enrolling sixth-grade classes, while the students currently enrolled will continue.

The DOE says the proposal to shutter the schools will be followed by a 45-day public comment period. The Panel for Education Policy will take a vote on the proposal in January.
