THE BRONX - Five men have been arrested after a shootout in University Heights that wounded an off-duty NYPD officer.

According to police, 36-year-old Nelson Vergara, a 12-year veteran of the force, was shot in the shoulder and the knee on Phelan Place as he was returning home at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. They say the suspects confronted him, threw a bottle and opened fire.

Vergara is in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.
