5 businesses destroyed in Jerome Avenue fire

THE BRONX - A massive fire on Jerome Avenue destroyed five businesses and injured nine firefighters this afternoon.

Fire officials say the fire that broke out at 2111 Jerome Ave. took more than 175 firefighters more than four hours to put out the flames.

Officials say the nine firefighters who were hurt suffered minor injuries.  They say no civilians were injured.

Jerome Avenue was shut down for hours as water cascaded and flooded the entire area. 

Children in a nearby day care were also evacuated due to the fire.
