Police say the driver struck a 60-year-old man

Police say the driver struck a 60-year-old man on Soundview and Story avenues.

THE BRONX - Police say that the elderly man behind the wheel of a hit-and-run in Soundview was driving under the influence of drugs. 

According to investigators, 72-year-old James Coleman was also driving without a license when he struck a 60-year-old man on Soundview and Story avenues at around 3 p.m. Thursday. 

Witnesses say that Coleman first hit a couple of cars while pulling out of a Western Beef parking lot, before striking the pedestrian in the crosswalk. He fled the scene at first, but a good Samaritan chased him down and forced him to stop. 

Coleman has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs and aggravated unlicensed operation. 

The victim was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center with severe head trauma. Doctors are still unsure if he will survive.
