AAA offers tips to save on gas prices over Memorial Day weekend

Connecticut's petroleum gross receipts tax will go up 4 cents per gallon. Diesel gasoline will also go up in price by 3.7 cents. (5/24/13)

NEW YORK - High gas prices could rain on your Memorial Day travel plans, but there are some tips to help you save at the pump.

According to AAA, drivers should fill up in an area with many gas stations since they tend to compete over the lowest price. Driving the speed limit and making sure your tires are properly inflated will also help conserve fuel.

Taking advantage of consumer driven websites is one more way to find the best gas deals. Even smartphone apps let users search for the best price by zip code or borough.

AAA says that while fuel prices are down from this time last year, they have been climbing up this spring. The average price for regular gas in New York City is $3.71, a 14-cent increase since last month, and above the national average of $3.65.
