THE BRONX - A neighborhood activist is collecting signatures to petition for a speed bump on Barnes Avenue after a boy was struck and killed.
Police say Michael Needham was riding his bicycle in front of Allerton Public Library when he was hit by a speeding car. Needham was in a coma for two weeks and succumbed to his injuries this weekend.
Neighbors are now calling on the Department of Transportation to install a speed bump in front of the library and at other areas where children hang out. Neighborhood activist Irene Estrada-Rukai has already collected 300 signatures on the petition. She says she is planning on getting 500 signatures before handing it to the DOT.
The DOT says a traffic study is under way. The results are expected by the end of August. While residents say they are happy about the study, they are not happy they will have to wait until August for the results.
Meanwhile, Needham will be laid to rest this week.
