THE BRONX - Bronx bicyclists say that while the infrastructure for bikers is getting better here, it's sorely lacking compared to other boroughs.

Activists are petitioning for improvements on the Third Avenue and Macombs Dam bridges to accommodate riders. They also want expanded bike lanes throughout the borough.

They point to Manhattan, where First Avenue has protected bike lanes all the way from Chinatown to 125th Street.

But on the other side of the Willis Avenue Bridge, "ride at your own risk," they say.

The Department of Transportation says the number of city cyclists doubled between 2007 and 2011, but activists say that number would have grown even larger had people felt safer on the roads.
