THE BRONX - Children at a middle school in Morrisania are asking for playground equipment.

When students at the Success Academy Bronx 2 Middle School on East 167th Street head outside for recess, they're left with what looks like a parking lot.

Administrators are asking the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for equipment - like benches and basketball hoops - for children to play on.

The current lot is used by the three schools in the building and owned by the Parks Department. Behind the chain link fence, where children play, there is a beautiful playground with basketball courts and a jungle gym.

But that is public space open to anyone- and unsafe for groups of middle school students during recess.

"They're playing football, they're playing other games, but they're playing on a slab of concrete that looks like a parking lot instead of an actual park," says Principal Laura Drecshel.

The empty lot is closed to the public on weekdays but reopens on weekends, so the school administrators believe the Parks Department will be able to make improvements.
