THE BRONX - An app will allow New Yorkers to pay for parking meters while using their smartphones.

The mayor's office says New Yorkers will be able to pay for all 85,000 metered parking spaces with their cellphones by the end of 2016.

The technology was first rolled out in the Belmont section of the Bronx in 2013.

It works by allowing drivers to add a credit card and license plate to the app.

When the driver requires more time, all they have to do is open up the app and add more time to the meter, no matter where they are.

All meter workers are expected to receive tablets upon rollout of the new app. The tablets will help workers connect to the new app, which will notify them if meters have been satisfied.

Residents can still pay meters the traditional way by using quarters, the mayor's office says.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to announce the availability of the new app during the State of City address on Thursday.
