Attorney: Ice-pick robber has history of mental problems

THE BRONX - The suspect accused of wielding an ice pick during a series of robberies has been asked by his attorney to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Defense lawyer Pat Bonanno says his client, John Martinez, has been hospitalized several times for mental problems.

Martinez is being held without bail after being arraignedyesterday on charges of robbing two women in elevators in a Bronxapartment complex on Nov. 14. Bronx prosecutors say he was armedwith a knife in one holdup and an ice pick in the other.

Prosecutors say security cameras recorded both incidents.

The Bronx district attorney's office told News 12 The Bronx that Martinez robbed eight people at knifepoint in 1989, was convicted and spent 10 years in prison. AP wire services were used in this report.
