THE BRONX - The city has broken ground on an affordable housing plan in Mott Haven that will give domestic abuse survivors new places to call home.

The Barrier Free Living Apartments is a $42 million project that will include about 120 units on East 138th and 139th streets, near Cypress Avenue. The development will have intensive on-site support services for tenants.

Once completed, 70 apartments will be available at one location for domestic violence survivors who have disabilities. The second location will have 51 apartments for families whose head of household is a domestic abuse survivor.

Construction is expected to be completed in about two years.
