THE BRONX - A local doctor has earned statewide recognition for the advances she's made toward HIV and AIDS prevention.

Dr. Yvette Calderon, of Jacobi Medical Center, is one of only three doctors in New York State to receive the prestigious Linda Laubenstein, MD, HIV Clinical Excellence Award.

Calderon advocated HIV testing as a routine procedure whenever someone comes into the emergency room, an idea that other hospitals around the world have now adopted, saving countless lives.

Since working in the Bronx, Calderon has tested more than 100,000 residents for HIV. She encourages anyone who hasn't been checked to call the hospital and arrange a free testing.
