The straight-A student says she has worked extremely hard since coming to the Bronx from Ghana three years ago. She is one of the hundreds of students who received a New York Times scholarship for $7,000 annually.

"She's not just a gifted student; she's a very special young woman," says Ruth Tully, Abaka-Yankson's guidance counselor.

Although she has not yet made up her mind, Abaka-Yankson says Columbia University has always been her dream school.
