Bill would ban employers from asking job applicants about criminal history

NEW YORK - A rally was held on the steps of City Hall Tuesday in support of a bill that could help former criminals gain employment in New York City.

The "Fair Chance Act" proposed by the City Council, would ban city employers from asking job applicants about their criminal records. The bill only allows employers to ask about a criminal record after a job offer is made.

The bill was introduced by council members who say they want everyone to have an equal opportunity when applying for a job.

If prospective employers were to violate the law, they could be hit with a $1,000 fine.
