Black ice a concern amid arctic blast

THE BRONX - A bitter-cold winter blast hit the Bronx this weekend, dropping temperatures into the teens and making it difficult for people to get around because of black ice.

"I walk slow if it's icy and I use my cane to walk with," says Catherine Simmons, of Soundview.

The cold temperatures and icy sidewalks are taking a toll not only on people, but also on their four-legged friends. Pets are at risk of frost bite and hypothermia.

People who venture outdoors this weekend are urged to bundle up and wear layers to stay warm.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the low 20s during the day today before dropping even lower Sunday. Meteorologists say more snow may be in the forecast next week.
