Blood drive held in memory of Bronx resident

RIVERDALE - Community members in Riverdale took part in a blood drive today to honor a fellow resident who died as well as to raise awareness about cancer.

Newcomb, who was a Korean War veteran, was voted 2007 Riverdale resident of the year.

Newcomb discovered he had cancer after being turned away from giving blood because the test showed he was anemic, and after going to the doctor, he learned he had cancer.

"Mike was a man of service, a man of his community, a blood drive encapsulates those two things," said Kevin Nallen, Michael's brother-in-law.
