Bloomberg orders mandatory evacuations

NEW YORK - (AP) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered mandatory evacuations for residents in low-lying coastal areas ahead of Hurricane Irene.

The low-lying areas are scattered across the city and are hometo about 270,000 residents.

Bloomberg calls the mandatory evacuations a first.

The evacuation posed a logistical challenge. For those withcars, parking is available at the city's evacuation centers. Fromthere, each family will be assigned to a shelter. Buses will runfrom the evacuation centers to the shelters.

All residents who live in the most vulnerable, 'Zone A' areas were ordered to evacuate by 5 p.m. Saturday.Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder
