THE BRONX - Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to announce new legislation that will make it tougher to purchase a gun.

Bloomberg has long pressed for tougher background checks for buyers. He says sellers at gun shows are not required to perform strict checks.

Bloomberg will speak about the legislation at the nation's capital with members of the House of Representatives today. The legislation stiffens penalties for states that fail to report drug abusers, domestic violence offenders and the mentally ill.
