THE BRONX - Plans for the future of the Kingsbridge Armory have gotten over another hurdle.

The borough board voted unanimously today to agree on the lease agreement for the planned Kingsbridge National Ice Center.

Opponents of the plan questioned if the space could have been better used as a mall or school.

Supporters say it will turn another piece of the Bronx into a community resource and tourist destination. They also say the plan would include the promise of living wage jobs for many residents.

Former New York Rangers captain Mark Messier and Olympic figure skating gold medalist Sarah Hughes joined supporters of the plan to demand that plans for the ice center get swift approval by the City Council.

The ice center would open in 2017 and include nine indoor ice rinks.
