THE BRONX - Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. sent President Barack Obama a letter asking to end the freeze on halting enforcement of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Diaz writes in the letter that his niece was honorably discharged from the United States Navy for her sexual orientation. With an earlier repeal of the policy, Diaz wrote his niece was excited to again serve her country. However, a freeze on the repeal of the law prevented her from doing so, according to the letter.

A three-judge panel Monday granted the government's request for a stay while itchallenges the trial court's ruling that the ban on openly gay service members is unconstitutional.
