THE BRONX - The Bronx's last volunteer ambulance corps says it is in danger of closing if it does not get the funds it needs.

Volunteers of the Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance Corps were out asking for donations at the intersection of Crosby Avenue and Middletown Road Saturday.

What began as a volunteer ambulance corps operating out of a trailer has evolved into a facility equipped with two ambulances and about 45 volunteers serving the Bronx for more than three decades.

Volunteers say the cost of insurance is their biggest obstacle, but they also need at least $83,000 for a new ambulance and a minimum of $65,000 just to stay open.

The corps received a $50,000 grant from the City Council back in 2013, but they say they've used up those funds.

The corps also serves as a first aid and CPR-training facility, and covers the schooling costs for its volunteers who want to become EMTs for outside agencies.
