Pope Benedict XVI has announced that he is resigning.

THE BRONX - Catholics across The Bronx say they are shocked that Pope Benedict XVI has decided to resign.

The 85-year-old said that he no longer has the strength to fulfill his duties. The unprecedented announcement has taken Catholics all over the world by surprise.

Churchgoers leaving Mass at Holy Cross Church in Soundview said he will be greatly missed. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan also spoke about the resignation, saying he was just as startled by the news as everyone else.

Pope Benedict visited New York in 2008, making a stop in The Bronx to celebrate Mass at Yankee Stadium. He is the first pontiff to resign in nearly 600 years.
