Bronx Christians mark start of Lent with Ash Wednesday Masses

Services conclude with the distribution of ashes, which are worn in the shape of a cross on your forehead. (3/5/14)

THE BRONX - Christians observed Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent.

All Ash Wednesday services concluded with the distribution of ashes, which are worn on a forehead in the shape of a cross. The cross symbolizes sinfulness and a need for penance, while the ashes represent mortality.

The season of Lent lasts for 40 days with a focus on sacrifice. Many in the Bronx say they’ll give something up, such as sweets, for the entire period, while others will focus on doing something good.
