THE BRONX - The Bronx District Attorney's Office Monday recommended a grand jury investigation into the police-involved slaying of a mentally ill woman in her own home.

Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old Castle Hill resident, was shot and killed on Oct. 18 by NYPD Sgt. Hugh Barry, an eight-year veteran, after she allegedly threatened him with a baseball bat.

Danner's family says she had schizophrenia, and police were frequently called to her apartment. Family members say that police knew they were responding to the home of a mentally ill woman when they arrived at Danner's Jamie Towers apartment that day.

"I have pledged to the people of the Bronx to conduct a thorough, fair investigation into this matter, and I believe that presenting the evidence to a grand jury will best accomplish that goal," said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

The grand jury is expected to determine whether criminal charges should be brought against Barry.
