Bronx firehouses face staff reductions

THE BRONX - Many Bronx firehouses could be losing one of their own as a staffing shakeup goes into effect at midnight.

The FDNY says it plans to take away the fifth firefighter at 60 of the largest engine companies, including several in the Bronx. The change would place four firefighters and one officer at each firehouse.

The firefighter unions say they plan to take legal action to stop the cost-cutting measure. Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy says the plan is unacceptable to public and firefighter safety.
