THE BRONX - The Newtown massacre has prompted some Bronx lawmakers to lobby for stricter gun control laws and community involvement in New York City.

Bronx council members Fernando Cabrera and Jimmy Vacca joined other elected officials on the steps of City Hall Tuesday. They are also pushing for more counseling to help identify and treat people suffering from mental health problems.

The group vowed to help organize more community-run gun buyback programs to get more weapons off the street starting in January. The city currently offers around-the-clock gun buybacks at all police precincts.
