CLAREMONT VILLAGE - A Bronx librarian's mission to bring early education to children living in homeless shelters is making its way across New York City.

Colbert Nehbhard is the manager at the Morrisania branch of the New York Public Library. Each week he makes his way to the Crotona Inn Family Shelter with books in hand ready to read to the kids living there.

Nehbhard says it's a pleasure to foster early literacy in the shelters. Thanks to his efforts, the Department of Homeless Services is looking to roll out a pilot library program to shelters citywide.

There are 30 shelter-based libraries across the five boroughs and 10 of them are in the Bronx. The program that Nehbhard is a part of was recently one of 14 nationwide recognized by the Library of Congress.

Nehbhard says it's his goal to leave a lasting impression on at least one child.
