CONCOURSE VILLAGE - Students at one Bronx middle school kicked off the last week of Black History Month with a day full of celebrations and learning.

The Bronx Writing Academy, located on East 167th Street, partnered with the History Channel to provide a lesson in black history that focused on the Tuskegee Airmen. The group of African-American pilots fought in World War II.

The middle school's step team and drama team also provided entertainment for their classmates.

In the weeks prior to the event, students wrote essays on black history for a contest. The winner took home a $750 check. The second place winner, eighth-grader Edwin George, was given an iPad.
