THE BRONX - A Bronx mother is one of the top 20 competitors appearing on the Fox cooking show “MasterChef.”

A receptionist by day, Kathy Prieto got the idea to audition for the show from her 9-year-old son Dylan, who saw a commercial for open tryouts.

Prieto says she never saw herself as a chef with her only background in Puerto Rican foods. She says she has always used the kitchen as a way to deal with life issues that come her way.

"MasterChef," hosted and produced by TV cooking veteran Gordon Ramsey, airs on Wednesday nights. Prieto has a chance to win $250,000 and her own cookbook if she becomes the next MasterChef.
