THE BRONX - A South Bronx native is turning his passion for service into patriotism, serving both his country in Afghanistan and New Yorkers in the NYPD.

Sgt. Jonathan Vasquez is a Marine heading back to Afghanistan next week for his second tour of duty. The 25-year-old joined the military just one day after graduating high school and then joined the police force in 2011.

He says he always knew he wanted to serve both his country and his city, and that 9/11 reaffirmed those dreams.

Vasquez plans to work for the 47th Precinct and finish his degree at Fordham University when he returns from Afghanistan.

Vasquez says he hopes his services act as a reflection of his patriotism and condolences for those who lost loved ones in America and abroad.
