Bronx prepares for deep freeze

Temperatures are expected to hit a low of 5 degrees overnight. (1/6/14)

SOUNDVIEW - Residents are preparing for tonight's extreme drop in temperature, which could see record-breaking lows in the borough.

Conditions were relatively mild today, with temperatures in the mid-40s melting lots of the snow that fell last week. But the forecast says temperatures are expected to hit a low of 5 degrees overnight, which would break the record low of 6 degrees set in 1896.

Tomorrow morning is expected to see a high of only 9 degrees and residents say they're going to make sure to bundle up and put on extra layers.

During the overnight hours, if it's below 40 degrees outside, the city says apartments must be heated to at least 55 degrees. If tenants think their landlord is not following these rules, they're advised to talk to their building manager.
