THE BRONX - Many Bronx residents spent the day today preparing for Hurricane Irene by boarding up their homes and businesses, and stocking up on groceries and supplies.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is asking everyone in The Bronx evacuation zones to get out now before Hurricane Irene arrives. The mayor also says it's likely that Con Edison may have to turn off power because sea water could damage underground power lines.

Hurricane Irene has weakened slightly, with sustained winds down to 85 mph from about 100 mph a day earlier, making it a Category 1, the least threatening on the scale. AP reports were used in this article.
