THE BRONX - Some Bronx residents donned orange clothes Tuesday to raise awareness about gun violence, which police say is on the rise in the city.

Damien Williams says he's been participating in "Wear Orange Day" since his cousin was fatally shot in 1989.

The NYPD reports that gun violence has risen 9 percent since 2014, and the Evander Childs school in the Bronx has had the highest number of violent incidents of any school in the city. That's why organizers held a national gun violence awareness event at the school.

Local leaders say one in five teens has seen a shooting victim.

City Councilman Andy King says he supports early intervention programs to keep young people away from guns.

"Violence does not just find you if you're doing the right thing," King says.
