THE BRONX - The Department of Transportation is planning to install pedestrian countdown clocks, refuge islands and bike lanes in several neighborhoods to lower the number of fatalities.

On Laconia Avenue alone, there were 251 crashes between 2004 and 2008. There were 358 people who were hurt, including 31 pedestrians.

Many local residents say the number is high because speeding is a major issue.

By the end of next year, the Department of Transportation says it hopes to install 200 pedestrian countdown clocks. The aim is to reduce traffic fatalities by 50 percent by the year 2030.
